The shade of red is important because you want it to match and/or compliment other colors in your room. If you have a lot of patterns happening within that room, like the couch or chair, maybe wallpaper, throw pillows etc, you may want to make a decision to select a solid red lamp. On the other hand, if the room is mostly solid colors, a cleverly placed patterned red lamp would delightfully accent your decor.
Another factor that is often overlooked is the texture or finish on your lamp. If you want the light to brighten the room and be a focal point, then a glossy, shiny finish may be just what you need. If you want the mood of the room to be more soft, subtle and somewhat romantic, then you may want a matte or flat finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, setting a more calming ambiance to your living area.
Keep in mind that red doesn’t necessarily mean ‘Fire Engine’ red. There are shades like a blush pink, which is in the red family. Cardinal and cherry are other more common colors that come to mind. Fuchsia, magenta, rust, salmon and wine colors also belong in the red family. Even some browns actually belong in the red spectrum. Red lamps can add a lot to a room, and may very well become a focal point, or even a conversation piece.
