Traditional lamps date back to a time when people used oil lamps or candles for lighting. A home or business would have several lamps in them to provide enough light for people to do their required daily tasks. Table lighting has been not only functional pieces, but sculptural objects to enhance the decor of the home or office.
Table lamps are made from any type of material such as wood, ceramic, shell, bamboo, iron and porcelains. The array and arrangement of the bases for these lighting fixtures is only limited by the imagination of the designer or artist that is creating it. Every decorating style is represented.
In homes you will find them placed in the living rooms or dens. They are usually in pairs set on either ends of a sofa or couch. Sometimes you will see one set by a chair to enhance the reading light from that seat. Or you will see tall ones that stand on the floor set in positions to lighten up darkened corners in the room. Women who do a lot of needle work such as embroidery and crochet like to have one close to the piece of furniture they sit in the most to do their craft.
Generally you will also find these traditional table lamps located in all the bedrooms of the home as well. Hotel and motel rooms always have them conveniently placed near the bed. With the use of these handy lighting extras a person can turn off the overhead lights and still have enough light to see to move about the room. Many people read in bed and they provide adequate lighting for this hobby.
Most of the time the switch that controls the overhead lights is not conveniently placed near the bed. So when people are awakened having these lighting fixtures close by lets them shed some light in the room before they get up.
Almost all rooms that are equipped with a desk for students to do their homework will have a small one to improve the quality of light. Reading and trying to visually concentrate in dim or poor lighting can cause strain on the eyes. It is important to make sure you are working in a room that has proper lighting.
As well as the different base materials and base shapes, these fixtures come with shades that can be just as extreme. The color, tone and look of the traditional lamps can be completely changed by simply changing the shade that is on it.
